Core rules reference

Terrain

Assign clear traits before deployment. A single feature can have more than one trait when each describes a different part of how it works.

Assign before play

Give each important feature one or more clear traits before deployment.

Traits can combine

A ruined wall might be a Barrier, Light Cover, and Breakable Terrain at the same time.

Use the agreed terrain

If a miniature's pose creates an absurd result, judge its base and the agreed terrain rather than the sculpt.

Terrain traits

TerrainCore definitionDefault effect
Open GroundClear, stable space with no meaningful obstruction.Move normally; it grants no cover.
BarrierA low wall, fence, barricade, or similar linear obstacle.A model must Climb unless a route passes around it. It commonly provides Light Cover.
Difficult TerrainA defined footprint such as rubble, woods, debris, or dense machinery.Models may enter if their bases fit. Models halve their movement while moving through it; it provides the agreed cover when sight crosses the footprint.
Light CoverPartial protection that obscures but does not fully hide the target.Add one Gray die to the target's Defense.
Heavy CoverSubstantial protection such as a vehicle, thick wall, or fortified position.Add one White die to the target's Defense.
Blocking TerrainA solid feature through which models cannot see or normally move.Blocks movement and line of sight. Move around it unless a rule grants another route.
Climbable TerrainA feature a model can cross or ascend with a legal landing point.During a Move, roll the Black die. Success completes the climb; Blank ends movement at the obstacle.
Operable TerrainA door, hatch, console, lift, switch, or similar interactive feature.A model in base contact may use Open/Close or the action printed by the mission.
Breakable TerrainA door, window, barrier, or object with an agreed Defense and result when broken.A model in base contact may Smash it. The terrain or mission defines the Defense and what changes after success.

Cover & sight

Cover is gained when the line of sight crosses the relevant terrain or an intervening model.

Completely obscured targets cannot be attacked. If a miniature's pose creates an absurd result, judge the base and the agreed terrain instead of the sculpt.
